Identify yourself. What meaning does the breath in your lungs hold? Have you stopped to think of the eternal consequence your existence has on humanity? You were not created to go through the conveyor belt of life without having impact. Yet some people walk around as though they are a negligible entity. This is one of the most harmful lies ever conceived in the heart of man. It is not true – not for me, not for anyone.
The truth is that each and every human being was created with purpose. Each of us was given a unique set of skills and talents that were meant to be shared with the world. Growing up we were taught that those are not as important as a grade on a report card, which marked how well we did at taking tests or handing in assignments. If you were good at it, you were smart. If not, you were mediocre. That rap sheet determined the types of careers you went after as an adult, the kind of life you allowed yourself to live, the dreams you were permitted to believe, and the ones that were just reserved for others.
Somewhere along the line, you were labeled. Whether it was your parents, teachers, or peers, you were stamped into a certain class of people and that’s where you remain to this day. But what if it’s not valid? What if you were never recognized for your true abilities, but simply lumped into a category that doesn’t fit you? What if what you believe about yourself didn’t originate from you or your Creator, but from those around you who misunderstood?
What if you could throw off those labels and start fresh? What if you could forget what you’ve been told and dig deep into your spirit to find out who you really are? What if those secret desires of your heart that tell the stories of things you would be doing if only you were someone else, were actually the very things designed for you to do?
What if you could live the life of your dreams? What if you could impact all of humanity by simply being authentically who you are, and casting off the fear that it’s not good enough? What if you had the courage to fully express yourself without reservation? Imagine the joy you’d experience from simply accepting and loving yourself without comparison to those you believe are better.
You see, you are not your label. You are not less than. You are extraordinary, spectacular, magnificent, handcrafted with love. Whether you were put on the “smart” track with all its expectations, or the “mediocre” track with all that entails, you have the freedom and responsibility to reinvent. Today, right now, you can make a decision to peel off the identify others placed on you while you were yet too young to understand, and determine to IDENTIFY YOURSELF.
While there is yet breath in your lungs.
I leave you with this quote by influential author, philosopher, theologian, educator, and civil rights leader, Howard Thurman:
“The ideal situation for a man or woman to die is to have family members standing with them as they cross over. But imagine, if you will, being on your death bed, and standing around your bed are the ghosts of the ideas, the abilities, the talents, the gifts, the dreams given to you by life. That you, for whatever reason, never pursued those dreams. You never did anything with those ideas. You never used those talents. You never used those gifts. You never took advantage of those opportunities. And there they are, standing around your bed, looking at you before you take your last dying breath, looking at you with angry eyes saying, ‘We came to you, and only you could have given us life and now we must die with you forever.’ Don’t let your dreams die with you.”
